Edinburgh-Shenzhen incubator project aims to support creative business

Xinhua, September 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Creativity and innovation has brought China's vibrant southern city of Shenzhen and Scotland's capital city closer through a joint incubator project of creative exchange launched here on Tuesday evening.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of Edinburgh-Shenzhen Creative Exchange, Donald Wilson, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, said: "This is a combination of a number of years of collaboration between the City of Edinburgh Council and the Shenzhen municipal government, supported by the Scottish government."

According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two sides in 2013, joint incubators will be established in each city for the local creative and tech companies to explore the market in the other city with up to two years' free incubation space as well as local support and business advice.

The Shenzhen incubator in Edinburgh is located at the Creative Exchange, a state-of-the-art business incubator to foster new talent and support the growth of start-up and digital media companies.

The sector encompasses advertising, architecture, art and design, computer and video games, crafts, designer fashion, film and video, music, the performing arts, publishing, software and broadcasting.

The joint incubator project is in accordance to the demand of economic and cultural growth in both sides as Shenzhen is China's first United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) City of Design and Edinburgh, the world's first UNESCO City of Literature, said Wu Yihuan, vice mayor of Shenzhen municipal people's government.

The Edinburgh incubator in Shenzhen is based in F518 Creative Industry Park and the space was opened in May, Wu added.

The project is expected to serve as a platform for businesses of both sides with complementary advantages to further explore cooperation opportunities in sectors of business and trade, culture, education, science, tourism, as well as medicine among others, she told Xinhua.

Scottish Minister for Europe and International Development Humza Yousaf hailed the joint incubator project and the increasing cooperation between Scotland and the Chinese side in various fields, as well as the Chinese community's contribution to Scotland. Endit
