Egypt's Sisi condoles Mexican president on tourists' death

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi made a phone call and offered condolences to his Mexican counterpart Enrique Pena Nieto on Tuesday over the accidental death of Mexican tourists in the Western Desert, official MENA news agency reported.

Egyptian authorities said that security forces mistakenly killed 12 people and injured 10 others who entered a restricted area of Bahariya Oasis at the Western Desert on Sunday evening while the forces were chasing some extremist militants.

At least eight Mexican tourists were confirmed dead among the 12, and the injured were sent to a classy hospital in the capital Cairo.

"Egypt will offer all sorts of assistance to provide necessary treatment and healthcare for the injured people and support the family members of the victims," Sisi told the Mexican president and assured that he personally follows up the investigations, according to Egyptian presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef.

Nieto has previously condemned the accident and called the Egyptian government for "a thorough investigation of what happened."

The Mexican foreign ministry said that Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu flew to Cairo with some family members of the victims to discuss the issue with Egyptian officials, describing the accident as "an unjustified attack." Endit
