Swedish fraudster cheats by posing as refugee charity: Police

Xinhua, September 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Swedish police on Tuesday shut down the bank account of a man suspected of tricking several people into making payments by posing as a refugee charity, local media reported on Tuesday.

Police said the suspect had tricked a handful of people into paying more than 1,000 SEK (120 U.S. dollars) each before the account was closed, public broadcaster Swedish Television reported.

"It is an abject crime to use people who want to help others in need," Jan Olsson at the fraud unit of Swedish police told the channel.

A company registered in Finland but posing as a Swedish charity wooed supporters by claiming the money would go toward the refugee agency UNHCR before sending them individual invoices that were paid to the man's bank account, according to the police.

Police said the incident was the first known case of a fraudster posing as a charitable institution. (1 U.S. dollar = 8.30 SEK) Endit
