One deminer was killed and another was severely injured when a mine exploded in a minefield near Karlovac, central Croatia, on Monday.

This happened when the deminers were working on a minefield of 3.7 square kilometers left from the 1990s war in Croatia, local media reported.

Both victims were sent to the nearby hospital in Ogulin. Doctors said Ivan Juric, from the Vukovar company, died from bleeding and his colleague Dario Skender was severely injured. He is recovering after surgery.

A total of 34 deminers have been killed and 120 others were injured while working on minefields since 1996.

There are around 505 square km of minefields from the 1990s war in Croatia. Endit
