Madagascar plans to immunize 11.3 mln children against poliomyelitis

Xinhua, September 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Madagascar has planned to immunize 11.3 million children from 0 to 15 years during a five-day campaign of vaccine against poliomyelitis which was opened on Monday in Tsihombe, extreme south of the country.

During the campaign, 22,171 vaccinators in 3,177 hospitals throughout the country will realize this dream of the Malagasy government, the chief of Vaccination services under the ministry of Health Dr. Louis Marius Rakotomanga told Xinhua by telephone.

Dr. Rakotomanga who led the campaign said that the vaccination will be free for all people in Madagascar during these five days.

Four million U.S. dollars was unlocked for this campaign with the help of the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children Fund and the U.S. agency for International development.

During the last 12 months, 10 cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus were confirmed, data from the ministry of Health said.

The circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus is dangerous because it renders unimmunized children paralyzed in life. Enditem
