Malian policeman killed in attack on security post

Xinhua, September 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

One Malian police officer was killed and another injured over the weekend when armed men on a motorcycle opened fire at a security post in Ouenkoro locality situated over 600 km north of the capital Bamako, an official source has said.

The office of Ouenkoro administrator as well as two of his vehicles were burnt, a statement from the government added.

The statement said that a unit of Malian security forces was deployed to the area to reinforce security and protect the civilian population.

The incident occurred just a day after an attack carried out by unknown assailants against a convoy of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in the Northern region of Gao, in which six Senegalese peacekeepers were injured.

The convoy was ambushed along Gao-Anefis road, some 15 km from Gao town, a statement released by MINUSMA indicated.

MINUSMA noted that recent deterioration of security demonstrates that it is important to mobilize everyone to fight against the enemies of peace in Mali, and ensure full execution of the peace deal signed in June.

Since its intervention in Mali in 2013, MINUSMA has lost 42 soldiers and 126 others have been injured. Endit
