Tusk says might call EU leaders' summit on migrants

Xinhua, September 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

European Council President Donald Tusk said on Friday that he would call an emergency meeting of the European Council at the end of September if a meeting of justice and home affairs ministers failed to reach an accord on the migrants issue Monday next week.

"The time has come to take decisions...based on consensus and genuine solidarity. Without such a decision, I would have to call a meeting of the European Council," said Tusk after talks with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades here.

They discussed the issue of migrants, and more particularly, the proposed plan of the European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker for the relocation of up to 160,000 migrants.

"Cyprus is a good example of a country that is ready to help and show solidarity," said Tusk after Anastasiades promised his support for Juncker's plan.

The EU officials said that following contacts with member states in the last few days, he felt more hopeful about the prospects of finding a solution.

The next regular meeting of the European Council is scheduled for mid-October. Endit
