Bahrain backs UN for hoisting Palestine flag at its headquarters

Xinhua, September 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bahrain welcomed on Friday the decision by the United Nations to hoist the flag of Palestine at its New York headquarters, according to a statement from the foreign ministry.

"The foreign ministry affirms that this historic decision is a positive and advanced step towards Palestinian people's regain of legitimate rights, end of the Israeli occupation and establishment of the independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Quds as a state capital," the ministry said in the statement.

"This is in line with the Arab Peace Initiative, the two-state solution and on the basis of international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions," the statement added.

The UN General Assembly had overwhelmingly voted in favor of raising the flag of the state of Palestine as a non-member observer state on the buildings of the UN agencies and offices, with 119 countries voted in favor, 45 nations abstain and eight others against it.

The United States and Israel are among the eight nations rejecting the endorsement. Endit
