1st LD Writethru: Explosion hits Nigeria's displaced persons camp

Xinhua, September 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

An explosion on Friday hit the camp of internally displaced persons in Nigeria's Yola city, capital of the northeastern state of Adamawa, the National Emergency Management Agency said.

A warehouse inside the internally displaced persons' camp was only affected by the blast, the rescue agency said, but did not confirm any death.

In a separate confirmation of the incident at Malkohi area of the province, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency said police have blocked all roads leading to the camp and preliminary investigation has commenced.

A witness identified as Bala Yaqub said the explosion came from a bomb planted somewhere around the warehouse in the displaced persons camp. No one was injured by the explosion as the warehouse is quite a distance to the place where people were gathered, he added.

The incident on Friday was first of such attacks to be carried out at a camp of internally displaced persons since the ruthless group, Boko Haram, declared war against Nigeria six years ago. Nearly two million people have been displaced and more than 13,000 have been killed, following the insurgency of Boko Haram since 2009.

At least 27 people were killed near a market in Yola more than two months ago, the last time Boko Haram attacked the northern city. Endit
