Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi met here Friday with Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania of the United States.

Yang said Chinese President Xi Jinping's coming visit to the United States later this month will be of great significance for advancing China-U.S. relations and expanding pragmatic cooperation in various areas.

Yang said Penn played an active role in cooperation with China over the years. He expressed the wish that Penn would continue to contribute to people-to-people exchanges and educational cooperation.

Gutmann said U.S.-China relations are of crucial importance for peace and prosperity of the two countries, the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world. She said Penn and other institutions of higher education in the United States are enthusiastic about President Xi's U.S. visit. She expressed Penn's readiness to further strengthen exchanges with China and play a positive role in bilateral relations.

The Philadelphia-based university is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States. The Ivy League university has a dozen graduate schools, all of which have cooperative relations with Chinese counterparts. Endi
