Security forces in crackdown against militants have killed two Taliban commanders in Afghanistan on Tuesday, police said.

In the latest operations, a drone attack against a Taliban hideout in the eastern Kunar province claimed the life of a key commander Mullah Ashrafullah Tuesday morning.

"Acting upon intelligence report and having identified the hideout of Taliban key commander Mullah Ashrafullah, in Ghazi Abad district of Kunar province, the security forces conducted a precise drone attack and killed him on the spot," provincial police chief Abdul Habib Sayedkhili told Xinhua.

The air strike occurred at 10:00 a.m. local time and no civilian was hurt during the operation.

Mullah Ashrafullah, according to the official was a leading commander in Kunar province and his death could be a major blow to the Taliban militants in the eastern region of Afghanistan.

Earlier in the day, security forces ambushed and killed a group commander of Taliban in the northern Kunduz province and injured three others, police confirmed.

"The security forces acting upon intelligence report organized an ambuscade against a group of Taliban in Bagh-e-Shirkat area Tuesday morning, killing their commander Mawlawi Abdul Qahar on the spot and injuring three others," provincial police chief Qasim Jangalbagh told reporters.

Taliban militants who have been fighting the government to regain power haven't commented on the government claims of the killing of their two commanders.

However, the armed outfit in an online statement claimed that the Taliban fighters captured several villages in Qaisar district of the northern Faryab province on Monday night and seized huge quantity of arms and ammunitions including two tanks, besides killing and injuring over two dozen security personnel.
