European week of sport kicks off in Brussels

Xinhua, September 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The first-ever European Week of Sport, a new initiative by the European Commission to inspire Europeans to participate in sports, kicked off here on Monday.

Each day of the week is to be dedicated to engaging in physical activity in a different setting such as school, workplace, the outdoors, as well as sport clubs and fitness centers.

Moreover, a series of workshops highlight the main theme of this year's event: how sport can contribute to fostering social inclusion and promoting tolerance, respect, and fair play at grassroots and professional levels.

In addition to the activities hosted in Brussels from September 7 to 13, hundreds of events are to take place in all 28 European Union (EU) member states, as well as in Macedonia, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Turkey during the whole month of September.

The campaign is part of the European Commission's effort to promote healthier lifestyles, improve general well-being, and build open, inclusive societies, said the European Commission. Endit
