Hong Kong Customs seizes ivory at airport

Xinhua, September 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hong Kong Customs has seized 24 kg of cut ivory pieces worth 240,000 HK dollars (about 30,850 U.S. dollars) from a parcel at Hong Kong International Airport, a Customs spokesman said on Friday.

The parcel, declared as "Decorative Tiles", was sent from Zimbabwe, via Amsterdam, and the case was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) for follow-up, said the spokesman.

The spokesman said Hong Kong Customs would continue to work with the AFCD as well as Hongkong Post to combat smuggling of endangered species by post.

Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing an endangered species without a license is liable to a maximum fine of 100,000 HK dollars and imprisonment for one year. Endi
