Tokyo stocks fell 2.15 percent on Friday, with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index briefly down more than 500 points in the afternoon, amid a cautious mood ahead of crucial U.S. labor market data due later in the day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 390.23 points, from Thursday to 17,792.16, to register its lowest closing level since Feb. 10. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 30.45 points, or 2.06 percent, to 1, 444.53.
