Xinhua, September 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Eighteen out of the 75 districts in Nepal have been announced as totally literate zones in terms of adult literacy, according to a latest government report.

The report released by Non Formal Education Center (NFEC) said only 7.5 percent people in the adult category (15-60 years of age) are now illiterate in the country.

As many as 37 districts are also in line to receive the illiteracy-free status. Nuwakot, a district close to the capital is set to become the 19th literate district next week.

The report said an adult literacy campaign which includes community learning centers has been successful to achieve the literacy growth.

According to the NFEC report, the highest number of illiterate people is in Dolpa, a district that lies in Karnali zone.

Nepali government started an intensive literacy campaign in 2009, aiming to achieve 100 percent literacy by 2015. For this, the government has declared 2014/15 as literacy year. However, the April 25 massive earthquake obstructed the drive. Endi
