Cambodia begins to construct 1st garment industry training institute

Xinhua, September 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cambodian garment workers will soon be able to boost their career prospects by taking courses at a specialized training institute set up by the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC).

Labor and Vocational Training Ministry Secretary of State Pich Sophoan and GMAC President Van Sou Ieng on Thursday broke ground for the construction of the Cambodian Garment Training Institute ( CGTI) at the site in Phnom Penh's Special Economic Zone.

Built with financial assistance from the French Development Agency, the institute will train local workers to fill middle management positions in garment factories across the country, according to a GMAC's statement.

The garment and footwear sector is Cambodia's largest industry and biggest employer, employing more than 600,000 workers.

The institute, which will cost around 3 million U.S. dollars and will be recognized as a private accredited training institute by the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, is set to open late next year, said the statement. Endi
