The No. 1 Serena Williams turned down world No. 110 Kiki Bertens on match 7-6, 6-3 with a slow start, qualifying into the US Open third round here on Wednesday.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion trailed by 5-3 in the first set and then 4-0 in the tiebreak against Bertens before she battled back to secure the opening set and then advancing in a 7-6 (5), 6-3 effort.

"Today I was a little tight, I think it showed, but hopefully I can get back to where I was before," said Williams, who will face fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the third round. Endit
