Xinhua, September 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

More than half of the French were opposed to the country accepting more refugees mainly from Syria as inflows of migrants continued to flood the European borders hoping for better life, a survey showed on Wednesday.

An Elabe poll conducted for the news channel BFMTV, found 56 percent of French respondents were not in favor of taking in more migrants.

The survey's data showed 32 percent of supporters of the the ruling Socialist Party (PS) and leftists allies were against the initiative to welcome more refugees while in the right camp, the figure almost doubled with 62 percent of its followers opposing it.

About 3,000 migrants from African countries and Middle East were camping in Calais, north France and trying to cross to Britain by boarding lorries and trains. Nine migrants died in the Eurotunnel since June.

According to the International Organization for Migration, 2,500 migrants have died so far this year in attempts to reach Europe by boat, a figure which reflects the worsening migration crisis as continued violence and high poverty in many African and Arab countries forced thousands of people to seek refuge overseas.
