China, ROK hope for resumed Japan talks

Xinhua, September 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Republic of Korea (ROK) President Park Geun-hye have called for the resumption of their stalled trilateral talks with Japan.

Meeting in Beijing on Wednesday, Li and Park agreed that relations between the three Asian countries are important for regional peace, stability and common prosperity.

China, the ROK and Japan met four times between 2008 and May 2011, but have been away from the negotiating table since then amid regional rows over historical and territorial issues.

"We hope all sides can make joint efforts to create favorable conditions for resumption of the meetings," said Li.

Park said the ROK was ready to "strengthen communication with all sides including China to arrange for the meetings to restart as early as possible."

As for China-ROK cooperation, Li suggested they work together more in emerging industries such as new energy and intelligent manufacturing, as well as in older ones such as equipment manufacturing, technology and finance.

Park said the ROK will continue to make full use of its free-trade agreement with China. She identified electronic communication and healthcare as sectors ripe for more cooperation.

The president also called for more cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Park is in China for the country's V-Day celebrations on Sept. 3. Chinese President Xi Jinping also met with her on Wednesday morning. Endi
