18 DR Congo security officers charged with murder, rape

Xinhua, September 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) on Tuesday charged 18 soldiers and police officers with murders and rape.

The crimes were committed by the soldiers and policemen in Kasindi, Mbau, Nobili and Kamango localities in the eastern province of North Kivu, according to military prosecutor Kumbu Ngoma.

It was at these localities the Congolese army clashed with the Allied Democratic Forces rebels.

"The objective of these prosecutions is to end cases of indiscipline within the Congolese army and police service and ensure justice for victims," Ngoma said at the opening of the case.

The judicial process is supported by the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office and the United Nations Development Program. Enditem
