Gunfight between militants, troops errupts in Kashmir

Xinhua, September 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

A gunfight between militants and Indian troops Wednesday broke out in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out in Ladoora village of Rafiabad in Baramulla district, about 70 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"The gunfight has started and militants are firing from inside a residential house near a public health center," said a police official posted in the area.

"Troops of Indian army and police are jointly trying to take on militants present there."

Reports said one to two militants are believed to be trapped inside the house. Officials said troops cordoned off the area following intelligence inputs about presence of militants in the area.

The exchange of gunfire between holed up militants and troops was going on until last reports came in.

Media reports said since Wednesday morning, no side has suffered casualty in the gunfight.

"We would share details after the gunfight is concluded," the police official said.Last week, Indian military said it killed four militants in a fierce gunfight in the area and captured their associate alive.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian- controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region. Endi
