Britain's great Mohamed Farah defended his 5,000m title at the world athletics championships here on Saturday.

Farah, also 10,000m winner here, proved his dominance in the middle and long distance run as the 2012 Olympic champion clocked 13:50.38 for the gold, beating second-placed Kenyan Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku by 1.37 seconds.

"It is difficult as everybody has got great speed and there are a lot of guys who are capable of winning. They went for it. The important thing is to win the race and I did that," he said.

Farah started to sprint in the last stage and put himself beyond Ndiku at the last 100 meters mark.

He said: "Tonight I had to dig it deep as you could see it came down to the last 100m. I kind of felt a bit tired, going through the rounds and come back again."

Ndiku, born in 1992, claimed his first medal at world championships.

"This silver at my first world championships among seniors is very exceptional for me especially for the reason that I did not feel myself as fast as I was the last year," said Ndiku, the son of a javelin thrower

"It was a very stressful race because you know, the final is always a very tactical fight and you have to watch all your opponents."
