Young power is on the rise in women's high jump at Beijing athletics world championships as Russian Maria Kuchina was crowned here on Saturday.

World indoor champion Kuchina, 22, cleared 2.01 meters, beating a field of well accomplished veterans to take Russia's second gold medal in the Bird's Nest National Stadium.

Two-time world champion Blanka Vlasic, 31, who also cleared the bar at 2.01 but with one more attempt at 1.92, returned to the scene of her silver medal performance at the 2008 Olympic Games and ended with another silver here.

The Croatian, world champion in 2007 and 2009, showed signs of returning to her best with successive 1.97m clearances before injury derailed her plans of a competitive July.

World leader and London Olympic champion Anna Chicherova settled for a bronze as the 33-year-old Russian veteran failed to repeat her best performance this season which was a successful 2.03m en route to victory in Lausanne last month.

Spaniard Ruth Beitia, 36, came fifth in her seventh straight world championships. Enditem
