1st Ld Writethru: India sends satellite aboard GSLV rocket

India's Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D6) lifted off from the Sriharikota spaceport at 16:.52 p.m. local time Thursday carrying communication satellite GSAT-6, said Indian officials.

This is be the ninth flight of the GSLV and the third flight using a cryogenic engine.

The GSAT-6, 49.1 meters tall weighing 416 tons, has several strategic applications.

The would put the 2,117 kg GSAT-6 communication satellite in the geosynchronous transfer orbit around 17 minutes into the flight.

Indian Space Research Organization scientists at the mission control center in Sriharikota watched their monitors intently to see the rocket's progress. Endi
