Burkina Faso court bars "ex-president's confidants" from contesting presidency

Burkina Faso's constitutional council has ruled that 42 "confidants" of former President Blaise Compaore were ineligible to contest the October elections, a judicial source said Wednesday.

The individuals, the court ruled, were guilty of having "actively" supported a constitutional amendment to extend Compaore's 27-year term.

Compare was forced to step down last October amid a mass uprising against his attempt.

Among the affected, two including Eddie Constance Komboigo, the new chairman of the former ruling Congress for Democracy and Progress party, were among 22 individuals who had expressed interest in running for president.

The final list for approved presidential candidates will be issued Saturday.

Burkina Faso is scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections on Oct. 11 to end the one-year transition period. Enditem
