1st LD: 2 senior army commanders killed in Iraq's Anbar

Xinhua, August 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two senior army commanders were killed on Thursday in a suicide attack in battles with Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq's western province of Anbar, a military statement said.

Staff Maj. Gen. Abdul-Rahaman Abu Raghif, deputy commander of Anbar provincial Operations Command, and Staff Brig. Gen. Sefien Abdul-Majid, commander of the Army's 10th Division, were killed when a suicide bomber detonated his car bomb near their vehicles during a military operation against IS militants north of Ramadi, the provincial capital, said the statement issued by the army's joint operations command.

A number of officers and soldiers were also killed and wounded in the blast, which occurred as the troops were advancing toward Ramadi, some 110 km west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the statement said without giving further details.

Iraqi security forces and allied Hashd Shaabi paramilitary militias have been fighting for months to retake control of key cities and towns in the largest province from IS militants, which seized most of Anbar and tried to advance toward Baghdad. Endit
