Coentrao follows Illaramendi out of Real Madrid door

Xinhua, August 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Real Madrid have confirmed the second departure from their squad in two days as left back Fabio Coentrao has joined French side, Monaco on loan.

Shortly after the sale of Asier Illaramendi to his former club Real Sociedad was confirmed, Coentrao joined Real Madrid from Benfica in 2011, but in recent seasons a string of injuries had hampered his progress and with Marcelo the first choice left back at the club, when he has been fit, his chances have been limited and last season saw him make just nine first team appearances.

Meanwhile the presence of left sided defender Nacho Fernandez in the squad, means that Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez has a natural replacement to cover for Coentrao's departure.

"It is a pleasure to be in Monaco and to represent this club. I am very happy and I hope that things work out well," said Coentrao on his arrival in the Principality.

His decision to join Monaco this season means he will not compete in the Champions League, given that the French side was defeated 4-3 on aggregate by Valencia in the play-off round earlier this week, but Coentrao's new side will play in the Europa League.

Monaco needed to sign an experienced left back after selling Layvin Kurzawa to Paris Saint Germain. Endite
