The Indian government on Thursday released a list of 98 cities, including 24 state capitals, which are to be developed as smart cities in accordance with a plan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Most of the smart cities will be in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, the southern state of Tamil Nadu and western state Maharashtra.

The southern states of Andhra Pradesh and eastern state of Bihara will also have some smart city projects.

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that the "prime motive behind the smart city project is to enhance urban life."

According to the government, the India Smart Cities Challenge is a competition designed to inspire and support municipal officials as they develop smart proposals to improve residents' lives.

About 100 cities have been competing in the first round with the best proposals receiving funding from the Ministry of Urban Development. Endi
