Austria builds refugee camp on Slovak border

A new camp for immigrants designed for Syrian refugees is being set up on the Austrian side of the border with Slovakia, local news agency TASR reported on Tuesday.

Mayor of Austrian border town Wolfstahl Gerhard Schodinger said the camp will be made up of container houses and should serve only for the temporary accommodation of between 40-60 immigrants. Two thirds of the camp will be occupied by single immigrants, the rest by families.

According to Slovak Interior Ministry, refugees for whom Austria is building a camp will not be able to cross the border into Slovakia.

"If people who are seeking asylum in Austria and who are placed in Austrian facilities get to Slovakia, they will be detained. Slovakia will return them to Austria," said Michaela Paulenova of the Slovak Interior Ministry on Tuesday.

She noted that the ministry has received no first-hand information on the building of the facility for asylum seekers. At any rate, the ministry neither can nor wants to interfere in any decisions of another sovereign country, according to the official.

"We'll adopt all necessary security precautions, just as we're already doing to address the current flow of migrants," added Paulenova. Endit
