EU condemns attacks against ICRC office in Yemen

Xinhua, August 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission on Tuesday strongly condemned the recent attack by armed gunmen on the offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Yemen.

EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides said in a statement that such attacks were an affront to International Humanitarian Law. They not only threatened the safety of humanitarian workers, but jeopardize the effective running of much needed humanitarian operations in Yemen, the commissioner said.

"We call on all parties to the conflict to respect International Humanitarian Law, and to cease targeting humanitarian workers so that they can do their job and deliver humanitarian aid to people in need," said the statement.

It said that the European Commission continues to provide humanitarian support to populations across Yemen suffering as a result of the conflict, as well as from malnutrition and food insecurity.

ICRC said unidentified gunmen stormed the ICRC office building on Monday and held staff at gunpoint. Cars, cash and equipment were subsequently stolen. As a result, 14 international staff members have been relocated. Endit
