Austrian chancellor criticizes EU countries opposed to refugee intake quotas

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann on Tuesday criticized European Union member states that are opposed to mandatory refugee intake quotas within the union.

"We will not progress further without such a quota," he said in an interview on the Oe1 Morgenjournal radio program. He specifically mentioned the Czech Republic, Poland, and the Baltic States Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

He said he hoped that together with help from Germany and France the quota, proposed by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, could be implemented.

The quota would be necessary to uphold the functioning of the Dublin Regulation, or the countries on the outer borders of the EU with the highest refugee intakes would otherwise be less likely to participate in the processing of refugees. He said this would be the case after they know they have to care for hundreds of thousands of people, while others simply remain in discussion over their part. Enditem
