Global leaders in the 25th annual World Water Week here urged global attention to the role of water for development and attempted to find solutions to the world's several escalating water crises.

According to a press release from the World Water Week, starting from Aug. 23, the role of water for development, this year's World Water Week theme, cannot be overestimated.

"Water is the foundation for all aspects of human and societal progress. We need it to survive - literally, to quench our thirst, to prepare our food, and maintain our hygiene, but it is also central to economic and social development, sustainable growth, and a prerequisite for healthy ecosystems," said the press release.

During the opening session on Monday, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said: "Sweden is committed to focus on water and sanitation within development cooperation. Climate change is no longer an issue for the future."

Other speakers at the opening session included Abdullah Ensour, Prime Minister of Jordan and Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) .

During the week, complex challenges related to water and development will be addressed by about 2,600 participants from more than one hundred countries, representing governments, the private sector, multilateral organizations, civil society and academia. Endit
