Saudi Arabia registers 5 MERS fatalities, 7 fresh cases in Riyadh

Xinhua, August 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Saudi Arabia registered on Monday five Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus fatalities and seven fresh cases all in Riyadh, the health ministry said in a statement.

The statement came short after an earlier statement by the ministry which confirmed the infection of 49 people with MERS coronavirus in a week.

Majority of new cases and fatalities were reported in Riyadh because of limited outbreak of the virus at a hospital in the capital city.

Saudi Arabia has identified 1,154 infections of the virus, including 492 deaths, since the appearance of the disease in the kingdom in 2012.

The MERS virus can cause symptoms such as fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure. Endit
