Myanmar opposition party, 88-generation group vow to cooperate in elections

Myanmar's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, and 88- Generation Peace and Open Society Group Monday reiterated their commitment to continue cooperating in electoral process, according to their joint statement.

The joint statement called on voters to keep high vigilance and check voters list personally in the general election.

The statement also called for monitoring and revealing misconduct in polling.

The two groups will cooperate with ethnic nationalities in the electoral process for emergence of a federal union, the statement said, adding that they will also cooperate with the people for the country's stability in the process of election and reform.

The 88 Generation Peace and Open Society Group was transformed from a former student group.

According to a preliminary candidate list announced on the weekend, a total of 6,189 candidates including 323 independents have so far registered to run in the November election.

Of the total, 5,866 candidates are from 93 political parties.

Of the 5,866 political party candidates, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, led by U Htay Oo, accounts for 1, 134, while the opposition National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, tops with 1,151. Endi
