EU to deploy mission to observe election in Myanmar

Xinhua, August 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) will deploy a mission to Myanmar to observe the country's upcoming general election scheduled for Nov. 8 under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Myanmar authorities, according to a press release of the EU Friday.

The MoU was signed by EU Ambassador to Myanmar Roland Kobia and the Union Election Commissioner in charge of International Observation Daw Myint Kyi.

The EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) will comprise more than 100 short and long-term observers from many of the Member States of the European Union in addition to observers from Canada, Switzerland and Norway and diplomats from embassies of EU countries accredited to Myanmar.

The core team of election experts is expected to arrive in the country weeks ahead of Election Day in order to reach out to a wide range of stakeholders and obtain a thorough understanding of the situation on the ground, the release said.

The EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement shortly after Election Day and a Final Report with recommendations at a later stage, it said.

According to Myanmar's Union Election Commission, a total of 6, 189 candidates including 323 independents have so far registered to run the upcoming general election in Myanmar set for Nov. 8, according to a preliminary candidate list announced by the commission Friday.

Of the total, 5,866 candidates were nominated from 93 political parties. Endi
