Communist cradle Ruijin in east China's Jiangxi Province was approved by the State Council, or Cabinet, as a "state-level historic and cultural city" on Wednesday.
The county-level city is one of the earliest centers of revolutionary activity for the Communist Party of China.
Ruijin has "an abundant revolutionary heritage" and is "the cradle for the People's Republic and the Communist spirit", according to a State Council statement. The city's traditional structure has been preserved well, which boasts important historical and cultural value, it said.
The statement required Ruijin to properly handle relations between urban development and heritage research and protection.
It asked Ruijin to formulate protection plans and demarcate streets, regions and architecture under protection.
"Activities that are unsuited for the environment and spirit of the historic city should be strictly forbidden," it said.
The forerunner of the People's Republic of China, the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic, was founded in Ruijin in 1931, and as such it is recognized as the "red capital" and a cradle of the Chinese revolution. Endit
