UN chief seriously concerned about escalation of violence along LoC

Xinhua, August 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Tuesday expressed serious concern about the recent escalation of violence along the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan.

The exchange of fire between troops of India and Pakistan broke out in Balkot sector of Poonch, about 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. Heavy shelling and firing have been continuing since Saturday. The deadly skirmishes have resulted in a number of casualties on both sides, including civilians.

"The Secretary-General calls upon the Governments of India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and take all feasible steps to ensure the protection of civilians," said a statement released by Ban's spokesperson.

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts.

The troops of India and Pakistan intermittently exchange fire on 720 km-long LoC and 198 km IB in Kashmir, despite an agreement in 2003 to observe cease-fire. Though some violations have been reported on both sides, the cease-fire however remains in effect.

The two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir and both claim the territory in full.

India and Pakistan share strained relations over a host of issues including Kashmir. The first-ever security level talks between the two countries is scheduled to be held on Aug. 23 in New Delhi.

Ban urged both countries to continue to address their differences through dialogue and expressed his hope that the talks will lead to positive outcomes. Endite
