Switzerland's Information Service for Public Transport reported Tuesday that trains were used 59 times on average by each person in 2014.

According to figures collected by the International Union of Railways (UIC), this makes Swiss train-usage the highest in Europe, followed by Luxembourg where each person caught the train 40 times last year, Denmark and Austria (29 times a year each), Britain (26 times) and Germany (25 times).

On a global level, only Japan recorded higher mean rail travel per person statistics, with each individual using the train on average 72 times last year in the East Asian country.

In terms of the distance covered by each inhabitant by train, Switzerland took first place worldwide as some 2,228 km were traveled by each passenger over the course of last year.

This compares to 2,042 km for Japan, 1,367 km for Austria, 1,271 km for France and 1,056 km for Britain.

Swiss Federal Railways are considered to be one of the most punctual and reliable railway services in the world.

A report published earlier this year by Swiss Railways shows that 87.7 percent of passengers arrived within three minutes of their scheduled arrival time last year, compared to 87.5 percent in 2013. Endit
