Xinhua, August 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Five illegal Syrian immigrants drowned and 24 others were rescued Tuesday when a boat sank in the Aegean Sea off western Turkey, private Dogan news agency reported.

The fiber boat, carrying a total of 29 Syrian immigrants heading for the Greek island of Istankoy, sank in the Aeagean Sea off the Bodrum town of the Mugla province, according to the report.

Turkish Coast Guards recovered five bodies and rescued 24 others including children, the report said, adding that an investigation is underway.

Turkey is geographically located between Asia and Europe, a major transit point for Middle Eastern and Asian migrants and refugees fleeing from poverty or conflict in their home countries. Endit
