Myanmar parliament speaker wishes stable, smooth democratic transition

Xinhua, August 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's parliament speaker U Shwe Mann expressed his hope on Tuesday that the country could carry out the democratic reform in a stable and smooth way.

Responding to the leadership change of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), U Shwe Mann told the House of Representatives that he did not want to bring matters in the party to the parliament.

U Htay Oo, who replaced U Shwe Mann as the USDP chairman on Aug. 13, said the party's leadership change was done with consolidation within the party and it would not bear grudge over any person.

The party would enter the Nov. 8 general election without change of its candidates, he said, stressing that there was also no change to the party's policy.

Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), believed change of the ruling party's leadership should not have an impact on the parliament.

The 12th regular session of Myanmar's House of Representatives (Lower House), which was adjourned since July 24 due to a massive flooding, resumed on Tuesday. Endi
