Over 1,000 people killed in Zambia road accidents in H1

Xinhua, August 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Road traffic accidents in Zambia claimed 1,028 lives in the first half of 2015, police said Tuesday.

According to the police figures, the country recorded about 16,400 road traffic accidents during that period, with 50 percent of those killed being pedestrians.

Pedestrians deaths made up 50 percent of road deaths in the first quarter of the year and 48 percent of road deaths in the second quarter,it said.

Meanwhile the Zambian Road Safety Trust (ZRST), a local lobby group that seeks to create awareness on road safety issues, has called for a continued need to focus on improving the safety of vulnerable road users.

Daniel Mwamba, the organization's chairperson said the road casualty figures for the first and second quarters of the year were a wakeup call that more still needed to be done to make the country's roads safer.

Zambian authorities have targeted to reduce road traffic accidents by 50 percent by 2020. Endit
