Myanmar gov't vows to ensure free, fair election

Myanmar government on Monday vowed to ensure that the upcoming general election will be free and fair by fully cooperating with the Union Election Commission, political parties, civil society and the public.

In its clarification of recent events, a government press release said preparations are now underway for holding the election on Nov. 8, which is expected to be the most widely participated and inclusive election since independence.

The release held that the government shall unconditionally accept the result of the election and honor the wishes of the electorate in accordance with existing laws and regulation.

Responding to concerning among the public about the incident that occurred at the headquarters of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) on Aug. 13, the release maintained that the event that took place involving the change of leadership and re-organization of the party are part of a normal course of business for a registered political party.

The government is also striving to achieve success with the peace process and ensuring stability and peace throughout the country, while making relentless efforts for relief and rehabilitation of flood-affected parts of the country, the release added. Endi
