India's largest low-cost airline, IndiGo, confirmed the order to buy 250 A320 aircraft, Airbus' biggest order, with a value of 26.5 billion euros (29.4 billion U. S. dollars), the European plane maker Airbus said on Monday.
"This order confirms the A320 family as the airliner of choice in the most dynamic aviation growth markets," said John Leahy, Airbus' Chief Operating Officer - Customers.
The Indian airline company has ordered 530 A320 aircraft so far, according to the statement.
With the new order, IndiGo has its sights set on developing long-term air transportation in India and overseas, said Aditya Ghosh IndiGo president.
"The additional fuel-efficient A320neo aircraft will enable us to continue to bring our low fares and courteous, hassle-free service to more customers and markets and will create more job opportunities and growth," Ghosh said.
A320neo is a new model with more efficient engines and large wing tip devices called Sharklets. They help to reduce engine noise and cut fuel consumption up to 15 percent.
A total of 11,800 Airbus A320 aircraft have been ordered and more than 6,600 delivered to more than 400 customers and operators worldwide, according to Airbus, which calls its A320 the world's best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. Endit
