Some 800 women war workers gathered in Richmond, California, to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and to try to break a world record of Rosie the Riveter gathering, local media reported Sunday.
Wearing blue overalls, red socks and red bandannas with white polka dots, about 800 Rosies gathered Saturday at the Rosie the Riveter Memorial, attempting to break last year's Guinness World Record of 776 Rosies gathered in one place at one time since World War II, which was set at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Rosie the Riveter is an icon representing the American women who worked in factories and shipyards in support of war during WWII.
"We wanted to make sure we did an event that would recognize people who were the real Rosies before they're gone," said organizer Sue Fritzke, acting superintendent of Rosie the Riveter World War II Homefront National Historic Park.
"If we'd waited until the 75th anniversary, a lot of them wouldn't be with us anymore," Fritzke was quoted as saying. Endi
