Tokyo stocks end 0.49 pct higher as Japan GDP contraction lower-than-expected

Tokyo stocks ended 0.49 percent higher Monday amid a sense of relief following the release of Japanese gross domestic product data, which showed a contraction in the April-June quarter but at slower than market expectation.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average increased 100.81 points, from Friday at 20,620.26. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 8.41 points, or 0.51 percent, to 1,672.87.

Gainers were led by textiles and apparel, foods and other products.

The turnover was 1,948.05 billion yen (about 15.66 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
