Czech Republic considers deploying 2,600 soldiers to protect borders: media

Xinhua, August 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Czech military may deploy up to 2,600 soldiers to guard the Czech border in the event of an emergency situation and a large influx of refugees, reported Czech Television Wednesday, referring to a report drafted by the Czech defense ministry.

According to the report, the presence of so many soldiers on the border would interrupt other obligations of the army.

In early August, Czech President Milos Zeman has said that the army was able to deploy up to 1,500 soldiers to protect the country's borders, but such a step was not being considered for the moment.

President Zeman, chairman of the Senate Milan Stech and chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Jan Hamacek agreed Tuesday that the Czech Republic must be prepared for a thorough protection of its borders if EU-wide measures fail.

Stech said strengthening Czech border may be carried out in the form of extraordinary military exercises.

The Czech army has about 21,000 soldiers at present. Endit
