Standards supporting Singapore's Smart Nation initiative laid out

Xinhua, August 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Internet of Things (IoT) Standards Outline in support of Singapore's Smart Nation initiative has been laid out, and the news was shared at the Quality and Standards Conference 2015 on Wednesday.

The IoT Standards Outline focuses on three types of standards, namely sensor network standards, IoT foundational standards and domain-specific standards.

It is expected to contribute to market adoption of IoT technologies and enable Singapore to exploit technology and innovation to address challenges such as the increased strain on healthcare facilities, traffic planning and congestion prevention, as well as demand for energy and resources, with the aim of enhancing the residents' quality of life.

Minister-in-Charge of Smart Nation Vivian Balakrishnan, who is also minister for the environment and water resources, said that standards play a critical role to create an environment where government agencies, planners, developers, manufacturers come together to develop new technologies and smart solutions efficiently.

The launch of a few standards under the IoT Standards Outline, which put the right infrastructure, policies, ecosystem and capabilities in place, marked the start of the journey in building a Smart Nation, he said at the meeting.

Vivian also expected to see more partnerships between the industry and the government to co-create ways to make Singapore more livable, sustainable and resilient. Endi
