Commonwealth anticipates democratic elections in Sri Lanka

Xinhua, August 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Commonwealth election observers on Wednesday said they were "cautiously optimistic" about a democratic parliamentary election in Sri Lanka next week.

The observers, who are in Sri Lanka at the invitation of Sri Lanka's department of elections, said they have found election process going peacefully.

"On behalf of my team, I can say that we are cautiously optimistic that we are on the right track for a democratic process in this election, but our appeal is for all stakeholders to remain constantly vigilant," Former President of Malta, Dr. George Abela, who is leading the Commonwealth Observer group in Sri Lanka, told journalists in capital Colombo.

The nine-member group who arrived in the island nation on Monday have already held discussions with the Sri Lankan Elections Commissioner and representatives of political parties and civil society. Endi
