Tokyo stocks open higher after steep gains on Wall Street

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Tuesday following overnight gains on Wall Street.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 117.16 points, or 0.56 percent, from Monday to 20,925.85. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 8.77 points, or 0.52 percent, to 1,700.06.

Gainers were led by iron and steel, nonferrous metals and mining issues. Endi
