Portugal raged by forest fires

Xinhua, August 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portuguese districts present a high risk of forest fires, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said Monday.

At least 26 districts in continental Portugal posed a "maximum fire risk," the IPMA said.

The regions include Vila de Rei, Serta, Sardoal, Pampilhosa and Ponte de Barca.

Over 100 districts from north to south of Portugal also presented a "very high risk" of forest fires, according to the report.

The IPMA has five levels of forest fires which go from reduced to maximum and last week warned that almost 80 percent of the Portuguese territory was experiencing "severe" or "extreme" drought, adding that the weather conditions were favorable for forest fires.

Temperatures will reach up to 38 degrees Celsius in southern cities like Evora and Beja, the IPMA said.

The National Fighting Fire service on Sunday registered 382 forest fires which were fought by 7,850 firefighters. Endit
